Stronger, Smarter & Standing Out: Cheapa Skips Powers Ahead in Brisbane’s Waste Race

In Brisbane’s booming construction corridor, competition in the waste industry is fierce. For family-owned operator Cheapa Skips, standing out in a crowded field requires more than just sharp pricing and fast turnarounds. It’s about presentation, reliability and a willingness to invest in the right equipment.

From its depots in Archerfield and Stapylton, Cheapa Skips services Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and the Gold Coast, supplying skip bins to commercial sites, builders and the public. It is a wide footprint and, as Director, Jayden Linsdell, explains, the trucks are constantly on the move.

“We’ve been operating for 22 years. I got into the business through the building industry, and we’ve grown steadily over that time. We now run a fleet of eight trucks on the road, with one spare, and employ six staff.”

A point of difference

That steady growth has come in a market where margins are tight, and differentiation is key.

“It’s very competitive. There are plenty of operators out there, so you’ve got to find ways to stand out,” Jayden says.

For Cheapa Skips, part of that strategy has been a deliberate shift towards premium transport equipment. The latest addition to the fleet, an Isuzu FVR 170-260, reflects that mindset.

Transport, Jayden says, is the backbone of the business.

“It’s critical. Transport is the backbone of what we do, so the quality of the trucks and how they’re presented are a big part of our brand. We’ve gone with the FVR with full wraps, plus extras like the stainless-steel accents, to really stand out. When you’re pulling onto a busy job site, first impressions matter.”

The bold presentation has sparked conversations on site, but for Jayden, the investment goes far deeper than looks.

“It definitely starts conversations. People come up to ask about the truck spec and often compliment the build. I believe it helps bring in new clients as well. It shows we take pride in what we do.”

Conversation starter: The Cheap Skips FVR 170-260 is flawlessly presented.

Tool for the job

Beyond the sharp look, under the cab, the FVR 170-260 is powered by Isuzu’s all-new 6-cylinder DB6A-TCN engine, producing 191 kW at 2,070 RPM and a gutsy 883 Nm of torque available from 1,000 to 2,070 RPM.

Paired with the Allison 3000 Gen 6 six-speed automatic transmission, the driveline delivers smooth, consistent performance across urban routes and busy construction sites.

The 6,690 cc DB6A engine delivers the truck punchy pulling power exactly where it’s needed in stop-start metro work and when hauling heavy skip bins at full 17,000 kg GVM.

In a waste application, where trucks are constantly loading, unloading and operating at or near capacity, that broad torque band helps reduce strain on the engine while maintaining consistent performance. For a business that runs at GVM day in, day out, the FVR’s torque band also translates to confident acceleration with a full load and less stress on the driveline.

The Euro VI compliant engine, featuring high pressure common rail fuel injection and selective catalytic reduction, supports improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions, helping to keep operating costs in check over the long term.

The FVR’s Allison 3000 Gen-6, six-speed automatic transmission further supports durability in tough conditions, delivering smooth shifts and helping protect the driveline from the shock loads that are common in waste operations.

Combined with full air disc brakes with electronic braking the total package is engineered to handle the rough and tumble nature of skip bin work across varied terrain.

“I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Up to the task

For operators like Cheapa Skips, that translates to confidence that the truck can stand up to tight sites, uneven ground and the daily punishment that comes with the job.

Jayden was particularly focused on manoeuvrability when selecting the model.

“It’s a single axle, so it’s more agile on building sites and quick around town. It’s ideal for delivering skip bins and handles the loads well. It’s also great to drive, with light steering and plenty of power.

“I wouldn’t change a thing.”

With electric power steering and a generous wheel lock angle (48.5° (inside wheel) / 33° (outside wheel)), the FVR offers the flexibility needed to access tight suburban blocks and confined commercial projects.

“We’re often getting into tight access areas on building sites. The short wheelbase makes a huge difference and the steering is super light, which makes positioning the truck much easier. Some of the places we’re asked to get into can be tricky, so that agility really helps.”

“It’s nice getting into a brand-new cab with all the updated features and safety gear."

All for the driver

Driver comfort was another key consideration. With long days covering a wide service area, keeping operators comfortable and alert is critical.

The FVR’s ISRI 6860/875 NTS2 air suspension driver’s seat with heating and ventilation, automatic climate control and the truck’s suite of advanced safety features including Advanced Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Full Speed Adaptive Cruise Control, all contribute to a more refined driving experience.

“The safety suite definitely adds to the overall experience,” Jayden says of the new model’s technology.

“It’s nice getting into a brand-new cab with all the updated features and safety gear. It makes the job more comfortable day-to-day.”

In a business built on tight schedules, reliability remains non-negotiable.

“Reliability and customer service are crucial. We work to strict deadlines and our clients rely on us. Being on time and efficient in our processes is essential. If we’re not reliable, it impacts their whole project.”

Keep it local

To support uptime, Cheapa Skips turns to on Brisbane Isuzu for servicing.

“All our trucks go back to Brisbane Isuzu for servicing,” Jayden said.

“They offer overnight servicing, which is ideal for us. The truck goes in after hours and is back on the road the next day. That’s exactly what we need - downtime just isn’t an option in this industry.”

With 25,000-kilometre or 12 months service intervals and a six-year factory warranty backing the truck and chassis, the FVR 170-260 provides additional peace of mind as the business continues to scale.

Onwards & upwards

Cheapa Skips’ story is also one of family and progression. Jayden’s father started the business as a sole trader more than two decades ago, later bringing Jayden into the fold.

What began with a single, second-hand truck has grown into a fleet operation servicing Southeast Queensland’s busiest corridors.

“It’s a busy industry and we’re always flat-out. We can never seem to have enough trucks or bins to keep up with demand. That’s a good problem to have, but it keeps us on our toes.”

In a hyper competitive market, Cheapa Skips is proving that growth is not just about volume. It is about investing in quality equipment, presenting a strong brand and backing it all up with reliability on site.

For Jayden and his team, the right truck is not just a tool of trade. It is a statement of intent.
