In 2025, Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) celebrated a unique milestone – over 300,000 trucks sold into what’s internationally recognised as the most competitive truck market globally and one of the most demanding.
And like any mechanical piece of equipment, those 300,000 trucks need regular maintenance, sometimes components wear out and occasionally something breaks.
All of this requires a steady stream of replacement parts on-hand and a team of talented parts professionals, capable of turning a customer’s description, a vehicle identification number and a maze of technical detail into the right component at the right time.
It's detailed, customer-facing work that demands broad product knowledge, problem-solving ability and an understanding of how a truck’s major systems fit together.
It’s also an area of the heavy vehicle workforce where the recruitment and retention of capable people is becoming increasingly difficult.
Part and parcel of the responsibility that comes with the title of long-term market leader is the need to build that capability from the ground up, and is the motivation behind the reintroduction of IAL’s Foundation Parts Training program in 2026; a program designed to strengthen the professional development path for new and early career parts employees across the Isuzu dealer network.

Parts with purpose
The three-day instructor-led program is designed for Isuzu dealer and Authorised Service and Parts Outlet (ASPO) parts consultants, interpreters and on-road representatives that are new to the industry or role.
It also supports career progression for employees preparing to move into customer-facing parts sales roles, including apprentice parts staff and those progressing from warehouse, administration, or other dealership roles.
IAL’s National Parts Sales Manager, Joel Gledhill, said the introduction of the program reflects the importance Isuzu places on parts expertise for its customers, dealers and the broader transport industry.
“A Parts Interpreter is the go-to parts expert within a dealership, but the role is much broader than looking up a number and placing an order,” Mr Gledhill said.
“It’s about understanding the customer, their truck and application and sifting through all the available information to arrive at the right solution.
“A skilled parts professional supports the customer and the workshop and plays a direct role in getting a truck back to work sooner.”

Starting line
IAL’s Foundation Parts Training gives participants a structured introduction to the people, products, systems and processes that sit behind Isuzu’s vast national parts operation and covers detailed information on everything from practical vehicle identification, digital and paper resources used across the network to basic technical instruction on the major systems and components used in Isuzu trucks.
“Modern trucks contain a huge amount of technical variation, so strong parts interpretation combines product understanding, digital capability and sound judgement,” Mr Gledhill said.
“We need our staff to understand where a part sits, what it does and why the correct interpretation is critical.
“This comprehensive foundation program is designed to give our people a clear base they can build on, and for our customers, they can have the confidence that IAL and our dealers are investing in industry-leading expertise.”

Room to move
In keeping with the broader road transport industry, the role of a Parts Interpreter continues to evolve with the development of new vehicle technology, electronic cataloguing, connected business systems and broader support offerings.
There are also multiple paths to wider industry roles and challenges with experience gained at the parts counter opening opportunities in field sales, inventory and warehouse operations, procurement, dealer management, technical support, product management and national aftersales positions.
Mr Gledhill said clear career pathways were essential as the heavy vehicle sector responds to persistent workforce shortages across technical and aftersales occupations.
“The industry needs to keep bringing people in, build retention and provide a path for career progression for current workers,” he said.
“When employees can see a future in the sector, with training support, visibility of where and how they can move up and an understanding of how the skills they’re developing can open up other opportunities, then we stand the best chance of working with them to build a career in the industry.
“Some of the best people in senior parts and aftersales roles began at a counter, in a warehouse or as an apprentice. That practical grounding stays with them throughout their working lives.”

For Mr Gledhill, investment in the people interpreting and supplying those products is fundamental to maintaining the service customers expect from Australia’s truck market leader.
“Our long-term success is due to the pursuit of excellence across our operations, and a strong parts operation is a critical element.
“We need knowledgeable people at every point in the chain, from the warehouse through to the dealership counter and at the customer’s site,” he said.
“Our Foundation Parts Training is a practical investment in that capability.
“It gives new people a stronger start, helps dealerships develop talent from within and supports the skills our industry will need well into the future.”
